Music and Math – Technical Mastery
In some ways, music is like mathematics. You'll hear this when you talk to some professionals who understand music history and how music has been treated, for example, in classic European societies.
Music is like mathematics in that it represents an intricate technical field in which complexity provides precision results. Like the study of numbers, music theory approaches tonal study with an exactness and sophistication that makes music such a powerful language wherever it's used. You see this in classic and traditional studies of music in German literature and philosophy. European schools see music in a particular way, that shows the technical and even mystical side of music as a pursuit, rather than just the “creative melody.”
Following A Passion
Music is like math in another way, too – it depends how you are taught.
The best music instruction shows off the complexity and elegance of music in a warm and welcoming way. By drawing students in and making them feel competent, it sets the stage for lifelong learning and eventual success and mastery.
The same is true with math – a pleasant brew of confidence, inspiration and ambition propels students to new heights.
At the same time, many students hate math simply because of the dullness and the unpleasant learning experience they had in school. Perhaps they weren't challenged or inspired, or they were told they were ‘not good at math’ – or the story of math simply wasn't told to them correctly. Much of the delight in solving mathematical equations is in how you approach math itself – whether you approach it as a dynamic, powerful way to understand your universe, or as drudgery that happens day in and day out because you are part of an education system.
